Icelandair has announced a new route. . .
From July 2009 they will be flying direct from Reykjavik (KEF) to Seattle (SEA).
There will be four flights a week and connections will be offered to other Nordic capitals - Helsinki, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. Icelandair will be selling flights from London to Seattle when the new service starts. Flights from Manchester will also be offered, but the timetable requires an overnight stop in Reykjavik (great!)
It's good to a new route and some positive news after all the doom and gloom surrounding the US and Icelandic economies of late.
I've only ever heard good things about Seattle as a tourist destination so a holiday combining Seattle with Iceland could be a wonderful experience.

Gothenburg
Just looking through the 50 best travel websites list in The Independent on Sunday and noticed that the only tourist board site on the list belongs to a Nordic country. It's www.Westsweden.com which is the official tourist organisation website for Gothenburg and the surrounding area.

Largest Red Nose in the world on DFDS ship
The DFDS ship, m.s. KING of SCANDINAVIA has what is believed to be the largest red nose in the world. DFDS, which sails between Harwich in Essex and Esbjerg in Denmark reckons they have implemented the largest red nose in the world, ever!

Romantic Scandinavian hotels
I posted a quick article on the Clarion in Stockholm making it into a top ten hotels list yesterday but have also noticed a couple of Nordic Hotels in the top ten most romantic hotels !
Hotel Kamp, Helsinki - Five Star. A 19th Century hotel 100 metres from Helsinki cathedral. Marble bathrooms are equipped with heated floors, bathrobes and slippers. Two restaurants serving Finnish and international cuisine.
Victory Hotel, Stockholm - Four star in the old town / Gamla Stan of Stockholm. My Stockholm contact informs me the restaurant here has a great reputation too.
If you are from the UK, it's a pretty good time to take a trip to Sweden now. The Swedish crown (SEK) has fallen versus the Euro just as the pound has, so the £ / SEK rate is similar to what it was a year ago. The other "bargain" for Brits at the moment is Iceland. Denmark and Finland are relatively expensive since Finland is in the Eurozone while the Danish crown is pegged to the Euro.

Stockholm's most popular hotel
Clarion Hotel in Stockholm has made it onto the top ten most popular hotels as measured by hotels.co.uk guests. As a double check, I have been over to TripAdvisor to check there and it also does very well. Ranking third most popular out of 166 hotels in Stockholm.

Iceland Express from Gatwick
From the 1st of May 2009 Iceland Express will be flying to Reykjavik from London Gatwick instead of London Stansted - a route it has served for six years.
BA / GB Airways used to fly from Gatwick to Reykjavik but the route has been unserved for about a year.
According to Iceland Express there are two reasons for the switch. Firstly, their sister airline Astreaus who operate flights for Iceland Express which is a "virtual airline" is based at Gatwick. The second reason is that they consider Gatwick as a more convenient hub for their passengers.
For British customers of course it just depends where you live. It's all very well saying that Gatwick is closer to central London but most people don't actually live in central London !
